Beal! Houston, Texas D. J Telhiard; a Louisiana Plant Instrument-Electrician Technician, returned to work on January 11, 1982 after having bladder surgery for removal of a malignant tumor. The surgery resulted in his being absent from work for approximately three weeks. Mr. Telhiard feels that the doctor was successful in removing all the malignant tissue. On February 4, 1982, as directed by his doctor, Mr. Telhiard re quested from Louisiana Plant's Safety Supervisor a list of all chemicals used at Louisiana Plant. It was suggested to Mr. Telhiard that the request was too general, in fact, so general that it would be very difficult to respond to such a request. Mr. Telhiard acknowledged that it was a general request and that he had mentioned this point to his doctor during their conversation; however, he was still instructed to make such a request. The Safety Supervisor informed Mr. Telhiard that his request would be brought to the attention of Louisiana Plant's management. It was suggested Jo Mr. Telhiard that he discuss this request further with his doctor. Hopefully, the doctor will be more specific and that his request will be put into writing. I There<:s much media,.,attention (television and radio) being given to known .and/f^y suspected carcinogens in the air and water supply for Baton RougeOand the surrounding area. This attention is causing an increased concern by many people. "There may be some correlation between the media .coverage and Mr. Telhiard's request. Mr. Telhiard's wife also suffers from some form of cancer^ We would be interested in knowing whether similar requests have been made at other Texaco locations and if OSHA 1910.20 "Access to Employe Exposure and Medical Records" applies to an overly general request such as we have received.
