It seems to me that we should establish this promptly. Hopefully, we will have a decision made on March 13 as to the epidemiology contract and I would urge that the Industry meeting then be held as soon after that date as possible. At the meeting I believe we should invite the epidemiology contractor to explain the rationale of the study because we are going to be requesting additional funds from the companies supporting the project. 1 know that you have your SOT meeting during the week of March 18, but perhaps a day during the following week or the week of April 1 should now be es tablished. I'm committed for March 28, March 29, and April 5. Because time is of the essence in this matter, as you know, 1 believe we should move as rapidly as possible in calling the Industry together as soon after the date of March 13 as we can. Oxford E-C-l_____________ (Location) We now have a smooth working relationship with the European group ( and have access to their data and vice versa. A team from the United States consisting of a Toxicologist and Histopathologist from Dow and a veterinary Pathologist from Olin went to Milan and Bologna. They were given detailed data which confirmed closely what we had been told earlier by Don Elliott of ICI. They also confirmed my evaluation that Professor Maltoni had a well designed experiment and was doing very high quality work. Dr. Duffield, Medical Director of ICl's Mond Divi sion, met with us in January. Our own animal study will be started in 4-6 weeks. Since it will involve over 2,000 animals, it takes a great deal of time to get underway. We have sent out inquiries to a half dozen groups competent in conducting epidemiological surveys. Four met with us on February 20. We asked them to submit proposals by March 9. We will select one shortly thereafter and will push hard to have the survey completed by the end of the year. As soon as we know the cost,MCA will approach each company for support as in the past. One point which should be reviewed carefully Is the venting during filling of tanks, tankcars and barges. Because of the volume and high vapor pressure, this loss to the environment can be very substantial. We should also push ahead with monitoring in the plant. I have done nothing at Monochem.
