Wheeler RECEIVED May 10, 1973 MAY 14 1973 R. N. WHEELER Mr. G. J. Williams Executive Vice-President Dow Chemical U.S.A. 2020 Dow Center Midland, Michigan 48640 Dear Mr. Williams: Subject: Toxicology Study Vinyl Chloride Monomer comments: In response to your letter of May 8th, I have the following Your proposal that the experimental program now active within MCA on the potential hazard of vinyl chloride monomer be discussed with Dr. Key of NIOSH has my support. The recommendation that consideration be given to sup porting the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists in lowering the Threshold Limit Values for vinyl chloride to 50 ppm in air (V/V) to assure a greater margin of safety where individuals may be exposed seems prudent. Such downward revision of the TLV may require removal of vinyl chloride from propellant blends; this matter would seem to need review with leaders in the aerosol packaging industry prior to taking action. Our Carl U. Demehl, M.D. located at 270 Park Avenue, New York, New York (Phone: 212-551-4785) has agreed to join the industry group In its approach to NIOSH. He will comment separately on the proposed agenda and is in sympathy with the proposal that NIOSH participation be solicited in whatever toxicologic program that is to be undertaken. Dr. Demehl is well known to Dr. Key and his associates In NIOSH. Please feel free to communicate directly with Dr. Demehl on this matter or with me if I can be of help in any special way. Sincerely A. B. STEEU5 w UCC 083599
