In some training courses, the candidate is issued a student badge upon successful com pletion of the training course and can qualify for an operator's badge only after a specified penod of driving on the job under close supervision, followed by an additional final examination In any case, close supervision is essenbal, especially immediately following the training penod when the newly qualified dnver is applying his lessons on the job In fact, as long as an operator remains on the job, his performance should be penodically checked to stop any tendency to lapse into unsafe practices
There are a number of Safe Dnver Award programs avadable These programs have been very effective in achieving extended penods of safe and productive operabon
Inspection and Maintenance
Powered industrial trucks should be in spected on a regular schedule Operators should make daily inspecbon of controls, brakes, bres, and other moving parts Check lists (Fig 27-24) should be used to record conditions requinng correcbon In addition, competent maintenance men should be as signed to keep the equipment in safe operat ing condibon Defecbve brakes, controls,
