April 21, 1983 SHAC ALERT - RADIO HANDSETS
Attached Distribution
cc SHAC PM SB
PLAINTIFF'S EXHIBIT
An operator had used an emergency shower following a chemical contact incident and was unable to contact the control room for assistance. Upon investigation it was found that water had shorted the radio handset extension speaker and rendered it inoperative. Water can get into the handset via cracked or missing rubber seals that cover the speaker button. Many radio handsets in the unit were found with the rubber seals missing or cracked.
( Since radios are often an integral part of safety alert systems, please check radios and handsets in your area for similar failures that could allow water to enter. Motorola has been alerted to the problem and will repair equipment seals as soon as possible.
