You asked Haskell to review the information and determine if the recommendations in the hazard determination letter of November 4,1992, might be revised. Assuming the neurological findings in these employees are related to exposure to lead, one cannot relate the effects to Specific levels of lead exposure or specific blood lead levels. Therefore, the recommendations in the letter of November 4 still hold. Namely, for women of child-bearing capability, exposures that result in lead absorption above background, as measured by blood lead, should be avoided For others, exposure to lead should be minimized to result in a bipod lead level as close as possible to background levels but not to exceed 35jjg/dL. Dave Cummings recently told me that Chambers Works is considering using 0.080 mg iead/L urine as an action level for putting people on the Watch List (as opposed to 0.110 mg iead/L urine, the current level). Haskell supports this consideration, Coupled with other work and industrial hygiene practices designed to minimize potential exposure, the preceding recommendations should adequately protect alfworkers from overexposure to lead.
