John Roades, Quality Control Engineer The survey was made in the company of Ur. i7. Hazard. Its purpose was to examine the plant operations with the view of discovering ary hazards to health which might exist as the results of the raw materials handled and the finished product produced. Raw Materials 1. Diatomaceous Earth The products of several U.S. manufacturers including Johns- Danville. The earth was not a pure" product (100 SiC2) but contained contaminants as clays. 2. Silica flour (high grade of free crystalline Si02 ground to a fine size) from Pennsylvania Pulverizer Company. 3. Tripoli (small quantities) from Illinois Mineral Coapany. Ii. Lime, Warren Conpary, Balfont, Pennsylvania. 5. Asbestos, Chrysotile, Johns-Kanville-Quebec, Canada ! Asbestos, Amosite (iron bearing) South Africa. 6. Kayolin (clay) small amounts from Georgia. 7. Seven sites were selected at which air-bome sample collections rill be made (vacuum cleaner on filter paper), by lb*. John Roades. The samples rill be forwarded to The Saranac Laboratory for analysis. The sketch. Fig. I, shows the locations of dust counts #1 to 7 inclusive and the air-borne sample collections fib to Hi inclusive. Bulk samples of all the main ram products used and of Light and Heavy Kaylo grades were also obtained for analysis. T/e believe that two main health hazards must be considered in this plant. Asbestos (long fiber) and crystalline free silica. ^th Hr. Hazard requested six (6) copies of a formal report of this survey be sent to him. The cost of this work was not discussed ECJUslr ccs T.U.
