The recarranendation was to implement the current AOGIH TLV of 50 ppm, based on the potential central nervous system effects. In comments at the rule making hearing the first week of August, NIOSH testified it was their opinion that significant risk remained for 53 chemicals for which the TLV was proposed as the new PEL. Methyl Chloride was one of those. This NIOSH testimony was based on the agency's assessment of the available animal carcinogenicity work. However, IARC recently reviewed the data for MeCl and has categorized it as Class 3, Insufficient Evidence for carcinogenicity in the most recent IARC update. I believe the IARC assessment to be more realistic and our internal standard of 10 ppm to be adequately protective for our employees. At this time, I see no need for additional hazard communication regarding Methyl Chloride.
