Pratt Street Baltimore, Maryland 21202 Dear Bob: The bulk insulation samples you sent have been analyzed for asbestos by polarized light microscopy and x-ray diffraction. The results are given below. "Ceiling in Control Room" The crystalline materials noted by x-ray diffraction were chrysotile and brucite. When examined by polarized light microscopy, it was noted that most of the material consisted of asbestiform birefringent particles with an index of refraction matching that of chrysotile asbestos. Based on this analysis, the sample contains asbestos. "Ceiling in Operator's Room" The crystalline materials noted in this sample were chrysotile, brucite, and hexahydrite. When examined by polarized light microscopy, it was noted that most of the material consisted of asbestiform birefringent particles with an index of refrac tion matching that of chrysotile asbestos. Based on this analysis, the sample contains asbestos. "Taken from Ceiling Tile" The x-ray diffraction pattern from this sample contained peaks which suggested a small amount of chrysotile was pre sent, but most of the material was non-crystalline. An optical examination disclosed that the majority of the sample was fibrous glass, but on closer examination, a small amount of white particulate contaminant was noted embedded in the fibrous glass sample. An optical examination of this CONFJDENt*!^ 003583 -2 particulate by polarized light microscopy found it to contain chrysotile asbestos. Based on this analysis, the sample con tains fibrous glass with some asbestos contaminant. I could not accumulate enough material from the sample labelled "Filter in Ventilation System" for an adequate analysis. If you have"any questions about this analysis, please let me know.
