8414 - DISTRICT SALES MEETINGS: Mr. Steudel advised the Board the district meetings, which have been completed for all districts except the Pacific Coast, have been extremely successful and that enthusiam for the Paint and Color Style Guide has grown as it has been put into use. There is evidence to show that it will be effective in getting a large number of new dealers as well as increasing sales of established dealers.
He outlined the work that will be done for next year to follow up the competitive advantage that has been gained.
8415 - STOCK OF SV.T: It was decided that a good stock of SWP should bo built up in anticipation of large spring sales volume.
8416 - INTsTJOD t.'ATER T:iNK COSTING: The board decided that interior water tank coating would be dropped as such from the price list since the sales volume is not large and since there is danger of it being used improperly with resulting complaints and possible suits. then requests are received for such a product, specific recommendations will be given not only on a product but also on conditions under which it should be applied.
8417 - ZINC a ND COPPER; uir. Davis reported that the price of zinc has dropped 1/4p a pound and that the price of copper has declined 1/2 during the past w/cek.
8418 - LINSEED OIL: Ur. Coolidgc reported that our stores, and Mr. Davis reported that our warehouses, have been well stocked 'with linseed oil. Sales to the trade during last rock wore very small.
8419 - CHIN*. y;OOD OIL: Hr. Davis reported that the situation on China Y.:ood oil is substantially unchanged and that there is every reason to believe there will be a shortage during the spring.
8420 - PERILLA OIL: lr. Davis reported that no quotations ar^ being made on seed or on free perilla oil. Out of a total production of 70,000 tons of seed, Japan and eianchuria arc taking 40,000 tons which leaves 50,000 tons of seed or 10,000 tons of oil for the rest of the world. As reported last week, the United States alone took 18,000 tons of oil last year.
8421 - CaSTOR OIL: Last week's production of Dehydrol amounted to 225,000 pounds as compared with factory consumption of about 87,000 pounds. The situation on raw castor is un changed. Ur. Coolidgc reported that we are keeping up vell on deliveries to the trade. It was decided that no further large sales would be made but that small quantities would be sold particularly for delivery in territory vest of Cleveland.
0007-SWP-000021956
It is uncertain whether or not any substantial quantity of beans or raw oil will be shipped to the United States from India.
8422 - INDUSTRIAL ZONES: ur. Steudel advised the Board that sales increases from our newly established in dustrial zones have been very satisfactory.
Mr. wills reported that there have continued to be a lot of requests for special developments for small industrial accounts. Since the cost of this developmental work for small accounts is very high in relation to the sales that are realized, it was pointed out steps must be taken to eliminate as much of it as possible.
8425 - EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE PAINT. VaRNISH AND LACQUER ASSOCIATION: dr. Steudel reported to the Board on the following problems discussed at last week's meeting of the Association's Executive Committees
1. An effort is to be made by the Scientific section to standardize thinning directions for house paint.
2. The- association agreed on two-coat exterior painting specifications pending only objections that may be raised before the end of this week. rir. Mills will review the specifications immediately.
5. Th. last-minute change in specifications on a number of projects from wood to asbestos siding or asbestos shingles in order to avoid the cost of painting. Th Board decided that comparative exposure tests should be made v.lth wood and asbestos shingles. Mr. I<iiils reported that we now have asbestos shingles on test and that they need paint to protect against water absorption. Reco.vend, tions ore to be drawn up for best products and procedure in painting them.
4, Tr- tih \it of aehydratod c star oil with chlorine to ts .-ced up drying. Iur. H- in ail.. inveuti._tt tile further.
5. Mark -on.. by the government and by individual companies in treating soya bean oil to promote drying.
8424 - a V.a RDS; Dr. V~n Stone reported on the Ne rk Martin,., t rich Cottingham merit award was made at the same time that twenty-fivu year presentations were made.
The Board -pproved his suggestion that two Cottingham merit awards of s?100.00 each and one award of %>50.00 be granted to technical men at Chicago. These awards '.ill be made at the same time that tv.enty-five year presentations are made.
8425 - BETa NaPHTHOL: In view of the increased demand for Beta Naphthol, the Board approved Dr. Van Stone's recommendation that an additional kettle be installed in the Beta Naphthol plant. A requisition for the cost of this installation will be submitted next week.
0007-SWP-000021957
-4-
Production of Beta Naphthol last'year amounted to 5,000,000 pounds as compared with 3,600,000 pounds the previous year. So far this year 5,000,000 pounds have been sold.
8426 - MARTIH-SENOUE AUTOMOTIVE COLORS: Mr. Sieplein was requested to report by the first of February on the cost and transfer prices of those automotive products mode only for Martin-Senour.
