DISCUSSION
The data, in T able #1 in d icate w o rk e r exp o su re lev els a r e g re a tly in e x c e s s of the c u r r e n t OSBA n u isa n c e d u st P E L d u rin g the b le n d e r clean out p rocess* A sb esto s ex p o su re is d ifficu lt to quantify because of the larg e e x c e s s of d u st which in te rfe re s with the fiber counting procedure* S teps taken to reduce d u st exposure should also low er asb esto s levels*
The clean out p ro c e s s n o rm ally re q u ire s one or two sh ifts to
com plete* It should be noted that only a sh o rt tim e period, which
o ccu rred approxim ately m idw ay through the clean out p ro c e ss,
w as sam pled* In addition, the em ployee involved in this operation
ac tu ally spends m o re tim e outside the blender (p rep arin g him self
before en terin g and cleaning h im self a fte r) than inside* Still the
m agnitude of the exposure lev els while inside the b len d er causes
the e ig h t h o u r TWA e x p o s u re to be in e x c e s s of the OSBA PEL*
A r e s p ir a to r w as being w orn by the em ployee w hile inside the b len d er,
but an organic vapor ca rtrid g e with a fe lt p articu late filte r which
was being used is not considered adequate for this situation. The
I
felt was com pletely p en etrated by d u st a fte r only seven m inutes
in sid e the b le n d er* T he e m p lo y e e 1 sa fe ty g la s s e s and face w ere
com pletely covered w ith d u st upon leaving the b len d er. E a r m uffs
w ere being w orn to reduce noise exposure*
The division should a c t to reduce dust exposures during this clean out process*
P o ssib le techniques to acco m p lish this include;
1*
R erouting ventilation on blender during cleanup so that
fre sh a i r m akeup e n te rs through top and is exhausted through
bottom thus pulling dust away from w orker,
2.
Rigging a i r h am m er to elim in ate a i r sp ray blowoff inside
blender w hich c re a te s fu rth er airb o rn e dust*
3*
Im proved re sp ira to r protection* P re sen t dust exposures
would re q u ire the use of a full face, high efficien cy , p r o
tection* The A irstre a m sy stem by Racal ap p ears w ell suited
f o r th is o p era tio n * The a i r su p p lied ,fA ir C ro w n " S y ste m
would provide excellen t p ro tectio n , elim inate the problem
of clogging filte rs and would probably re s u lt a m uch

-4 -* fa ste r clean out process* F u rth e rm o re , this system could be adapted for use in oth er ex c essiv e dusty operations like baghouse m aintenance. E nvironm ental E ngineering can a s s is t in im plem enting the dust reduction program . /dec
