your Company and of the Kettering Laboratori^a^ in Cincinnati, Ohio, have discussed with me and other individuals in my office the prospective use of antiknock compounds containing tetramethyl lead. They have informed me that available data indicate that such compounds can be safely made, distributed and used providing the precautions followed for many years in connection with com pounds containing tetraethyl lead are observed. They have further informed me that certain suppliers of antiknock compound propose to manufacture and sell compounds containing tetramethyl lead and that certain refiners would like to use them because their use provides certain technical and economic advantages over compounds containing tetraethyl lead. On the basis of our discussions I see no objection to the introduction of antiknock compounds containing tetramethyl lead if the industry should decide that their use is advantageous and that they can safely be made and handled.
