The photographs show how an Elliott 100,000Ib-per-hr horizontal deaerating feedwater heater was manipulated in through a window to replace an older heater in the plant of the Western Massachu-, setts Electric Company, Pittsfield, Mass. This company, organized in 1906, operated for a few years as a Diesel plant. In 1910 they installed two boilers and a 750-kw turbine-generator unit. In 1913, a 1000-kw turbine-generator unit was added, and in 1917 a 2500-kw unit and additional steam generating capacity. In 1922, a 5000-kw condensing turbine-generator was added and is still available for service to supplement power genera tion capacity at other stations in the system. The Pittsfield Electric Company combined with other companies in Western Massachusetts in 1923 and became known as the Pittsfield Elec tric Company Division of Western Massachusetts Companies. Later, all divisions were combined into one company, presently known as Western Massachusetts Elec tric Company. While the 5000-kw turbine is only operated during peak load or emergency periods, the station is used for sup plying heating steam to the business section of Pitts field.
