Tank Incident Number 23 Brief Summary Tank Numbers 110, 11.1, 122 - Gulf Oil Company, Norfolk .Virginia - May 1944 A series of three tanks were cleaned from April 11 through May 12, 1944. All precautions were taken. One man became ill five days after completion of last tank job. Original diagnosis of La Grippe and later of pneumonia. Because of delirium and work history lead encephalopathy was considered and blood lead reported as "positive" by hospital laboratory. This illness followed a not unusual course for pneumonia with toxic delirium and analysis of the blood in this laboratory would not support a diagnosis of lead encephalopathy, 7 men were involved in cleaning three tanks.
