It will be recalled from previous efforts of this nature that the AIA, with approval of its Governing Council, has collected data on dust levels in factories and mines and mills from companies belonging to national associations that are members of the Asbestos International Association. Surveys were conducted for the years 19831988. This survey applies to 1989. It is understood that the asbestos producers in Canada will be participating in this survey through The Asbestos Institute. This new format is applicable to each factory concerned which is requested to complete the form individually and anonymously. All companies or factories should then return these forms to their National Association as pre-printed on the top part of the form. Association Members are then requested to simply forward to AIA Paris copies of their individual returns as they become available from their members companies. The DAP is of the opinion that this procedure will allow for a better understanding of the situation together with a shorter delay in preparing the final AIA report. It is again pointed out that full confidentiality and anonymity of the data will be preserved as required by the Governing Council. As we anticipate to present an evaluation of this enquiry at the 23rd International Congress on Occupational Health on September 1990 in Montreal, we need to fix the deadline for return of the forms before August the 1st, 1990. cc: Executive Committee CTDG26125 ANNEX to 1889 DMR Form* 19 9 0 NOTBS FOR GUIDANCE WHEN COMPLETING THE DUST MEASUREMENT RECORD (DMR) The DMR is confidential,and only an AIA composite report will be made public. Individual factories and companies will not be disclosed. The total workforce referred to in Question 1 should include all personnal on the pay roll including office staff, etc. The "workers under survey" referred to in question 1 are the number of workers to whom an exposure index is assigned in the factory records. The enquiry about laboratory control schemes referred to in question 6 reflects the importance of this issue and all laboratories carrying out analysis should take part in a well constructed scheme. The AIA counting trial is available to all AIA member associations. The table 8 requesting information about the monitoring data refers to both static and personal sampling. Personal samples are intended to monitor exposure or individual persons and are attached to the person being monitored. Static samples are used to measure general dust levels and are used for engineering control purposes. The column headed "Workers in the Class" refers to the number of persons allocated to each class of measurement. For instance if a sample is taken to represent a work group of 10 persons because their work practices are identical the entry should be 10 and not 1. Considerable care is necessary when deciding upon group representation of this nature. Most workers have individual work practices which greatly influence exposure.
