Subject: Asbestos Evaluation - Canton Forge Plant
By copy of this letter I am asking Roger Wabeke to assign one of the Field
Hygienists for the purpose of conducting an evaluation at the Canton Forge
Plant to determine the extent of the asbestos contamination discussed in
your letter of June 15, 1981.
Following this evaluation as well as observation and discussion with plant personnel, a joint determination should be made regarding the method by which asbestos covered piping will be treated. It would be premature at this time to determine whether or not this protective covering should be removed and replaced by safer substitute materials, or whether appropriate treatment products should be obtained for the purpose of covering the present asbestos I pipe covering.
Even though there are products on the market which can be applied to the surface of deteriorating asbestos for the purpose of solidifying and holding asbestos in place in a resinous matrix, it may be determined because of the deteriorated nature of the pipe coverings you describe that complete removal and replacement would be more appropriate. However, this decision will remain to be seen following our evaluation.
