HF STUDIES
During July an extensive study was undertaken in the Semi-works Cowles Dissolver largely directed toward the use of undried Crude presseake in the grinding operation. The Semi-works grinds have been completed but, due to the vacation period, most of the evaluations remain to be done.
From the limited evaluations completed, it is possible to conclude that the Newport crude presscakea contain very much more kerosene than was In the Newark crude presseake ground successfully in June and that they do not respond to the operation with the same degree of success. Furthermore, it appears that, in a combination of water, kerosene and borax, Antarox A-20Q is of no advantage and may be undesirable.
When the Newport presscakes failed to respond to the HF process, portions were dried to varying kerosene contents and ground in the absence of water. Results on these tests are not yet available.
Some Semi-works studies were also made using lower boraxpigment ratios* There was some sacrifice in rate of grinding and in ultimate strength but the full economic possibilities require further study.
One laboratory grind of a eutectic crude green was made with borax. As previously noted, the strength development was disappointingly slow and the final strength after 3 hours was below that of GT-674-Dj but the hue was quite intense.
