FIELD PRACTICES-ASBESrOS CEMENT PIPE
OSHA regulations as published in the Federal Register, Wednesday, June 7th, 1972, Volume 37, Number 110, Part I provide for a standard for ex* posure to asbestos dust.
As a result of our investigation into dust levels generated by various methods of field cutting end trimming asbestos-cement pipe products, the follow ing methods can be used to field cut and trim as bestos-cement pipe products in an effort Jo achieve compliance with the above regulations. 1. Manually operated cutting and machining tools
as designed especially for use with asbestoscement pipe and available from various manu facturers. 2 Power driven cutting and machining tools as in Number 1 above. 3. Hand Sawing. 4. Hand Rasping. 5. Hammer and chisel (such as used to make a lateral tie-in into a sewer or storm drain). We do not recommend the use of power driven circular saws that utilize abrasive discs (masonry blades) unless the operator and anyone directly as sisting him is using a respiratory protective device that complies with the U. S. Bureau of Mines Sched ule 21-B. As an additional method of providing minimum amount of dust a small vacuum cleaning device should be considered. Respirators that com ply with this specification are available from the following manufacturers, as well as others: 1. American Optical Company, Southbridge, Mas sachusetts 2. Mine Safety Appliances Company, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 3. Welsh Manufacturing Company, Providence, Rhode Island 4. Willson Products Division, ESB Inc., Reading, Pennsylvania.
