MCA Semi-annual Meeting A panel session on "Executive Health" will be held at the MCA Semi-annual Meeting in New York on November 26th with Dr. H.H. Golz of American Cyanamid Co. as moderator. Ethyl glycol monomethyl ether - Union Carbide Corp. B. Revisions a) Phenol. - Details of two fatalities due to exposure to phenol were brought to the attention of the com mittee . CMA 060067 MAC-4 5 The medical management section of the proposed re vision to SD-4-Phenol was reconsidered in the light of these two incidents which showed that in each case the victim lost consciousness approximately five minutes after exposure (even though he got under the shower without delay) and died in about 20 minutes. Dr. Dernehl recalled a similar case in which the man died in the shower. Subsequent research revealed that water is as effective as other substances tested (al cohol, ferric chloride, soap solution etc) in removing phenol from the skin. After discussion it was agreed to change 10.1.2.1 to include the sentence "collapse and death may occur in a few minutes after massive exposure in spite of prompt emergency care". Changes to other portions of the medical management sections and to 5.2.2.5 "Body, Skin and Hand Protection" were also recommended. This section may be changed to: " Intermittent skin contact with trace amounts of liquid phenol may produce dermatitis at the site of con tact. Sustained skin contact may cause serious or fatal systemic illness. " Clothing made of neoprene or other impervious material may be worn to protect the body against phenol splashes. It is imperative that contaminated clothing be removed promptly and laundered before re-use. Affected areas of the body should be washed thoroughly with soap and water (except the eyes which should be washed with water). As a general hygienic measure, facilities for personal cleanliness should be provided and washing be fore lunch and at the end of the work day should be en couraged." b) Other revisions in preparation SD-12 Carbon Disulfide - Dr. A. Handling of medical and toxicological injuries by indi vidual firms * From time to time companies receive requests for informa tion on the toxicology of their products or for medical advice. Such requests are frequently first received by the Sales De partment and are passed on to the Medical Department for handling. 5. Rules of Organization and Procedure The secretary announced that the Rules of Organization and Procedure as recommended by the Committee at its March 18, 1963 meeting have been approved by the MCA Board of Directors. 6. The Committee considered a proposal by Dr. K. P. Whitehead, Division Medical Officer, Imperial Chemical Industries that MCA accident case histories should include a note to indicate treat ment given in those cases which are not mechanical injuries.
