Newport News, VA 23606 Re: Mr. FJedler; Second Experiment Dear Mr. Hatten: Per your request, we conducted; the second round of asbestos fiber release experiments todaiy with Mr. Fiedler. A description of how the experiments were performed and the results observed follow. We were asked to perform three experiments on this day. We were to repeat the experiment iperformed on Crane material' 333 on February 27, 1988. Secondly, we were to perform two fiber release experiments on Gjarlock gasket material. We used a different light source,: I.e., the light from a 500 watt slide projector. Mr. Ambrose, who recorded the videotape of the experiments, arrived at the laboratory at 91:25 and Mr. Ftedler arrived at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday March 6, 1988. The first experiment was conducted on Crane sample number 333, the sample previously determined to contain 90? asbestos. The second and thfrid experiments were performed on Garlcck gasket materials numbered 7228 and 7021 . In each case, the sealed samples, a metal flange, a file, end a ball peen hammer were ptjaced Inside a glovebox. The use and operation of a giovebolx had been previously explained to Mr. Fiedler. Mr.I Fiedler manipulated the asbestos containing material linslde the glovebox In the same manner described In the earlier report of February 27, 1988. Mr. Fiedler used a hammer and if lie In the preparation of three gaskets. A light beam fjrom the slide projector light source described above was used as a light source. Light was directed through the space; Immediately below the location of filing. Light frdm falling material reflected; off airborne particulate matter. A clean air sample was taken from the glovjebox before each experiment was begun. The clean air sampjles demonstrated that the glovebox was uncontaminated. The experimental samples were taken while the manipulation off the asbestos was taking place. The airborne conesntraifIon of asbestos within the glovebox while the manlpul attojn of asbestos took place Is set forth In the following tabjle.
