Subject : VCM Emissions Prom Sweco Under Non-Stripping Conditions
Last night two large reactor batches, one a 5305 and the other a 5425, were dropped without steam stripping. 'Hie recovery procedure used a 20 minute hold period at a 20 inch vacuum condition to remove as much VCM as possible prior to dump. The non-str.ipped batches were produced at the request of Ponca City to supDly material for testing the Goodrich stripping process.
During the dumps of these batches I monitored the Honeywell readings at the Sweco to identify the concentrationsof VCM which exist when dumping a nonstripped batch. As a comparison September data under stripping conditions showed 4.1% readings in excess of 1 ppm and 0.5% above 5 ppm.
'Hie concentrations during dump of the 5305 batch ranged from 5-25 ppm with the average of 6 readings being 10 ppm. Concentrations above 1 ppm persisted until about 10 minutes into chem wash.
The'concentrations during dump of the 5425 batch ranged from 4-13 ppm with the average of 5 readings being S ppm. Again concentrations above 1 ppm persisted until about 10 minutes into chem wash.
Tills data points out the value of in-reactor stripping in reducing potential exposures in the Sweco, chem wash and reactor areas. If Conoco adopts an external stripping process such as Goodrich these 0S1IA problems as well as the related EPA problems will need attention. Possibly both in reactor and external stripping will be necessary.
