REMOVAL OF INSULATION MATERIALS CONTAINING ASBESTOS Asbestos Regulations have been promulgated in Queensland and South Australia and are under review in other states. The National Health and Medical Research Council has proposed 'Model Asbestos Regulations' which have influenced respective states' legislation in varying degrees. The regulations are directed principally at circumstance where an individual is handling asbestos-containing materials as a major part of his work. Where the handling of asbestoscontaining materials is done on an intermittent basis, as will be the case in most C5R factories, the regulations provide for the Chief Inspector of the Department of Labour and Industry in the respective state to suspend the operatior of any part of the regulations. The regulations impose stringent requirements as to medical surveillance, local exhaust ventilation, etc., and a failure to apply for an exemption may result in that factory contravening them. In all cases, before major stripping of asbestoscontaining insulation is undertaken, asbestos regulations in force in that State should be checked and the requisite notice given to the Chief Inspector. / The attached code of practice has been developed in co-operation with the Environment Officer - Wunderlich. It is based largely on the codes developed by: South of Scotland Electricity Board, U.K., Central Electricity Generating Board, U.K., Electricity Commission of New South Wales. The code has been submitted to the Australian Asbestos Industry Occupational Hygiene Committee for comment. It has been released in draft fora in response to a number of enquiries from within the CSR group of companies as to the safe handling of asbestos-containing thermal insulation, both for comment and for implementation. Please direct all comments, suggestions for improvements, and requests for additional copies, to Mr. J.H.
