Brecksville R & D Center, D/8506 DATE YOUR LETTER DATE THIS LETTER Nov. 3, 1978 I received from you 6 impingers to be analyzed for TDI, (toluene dlisocyanates). They were received 10/25/78 and given Log # 243. The procedure used for analysis was NIOSH Method P&CAM 141. In my calculations from micrograms to ppm, the temperature was taken to be 298K and the pressure used was 760 iron Hg. All results are recorded on data sheet enclosed. Any further information needed please refer to Log # 243. cc: P. M. Zakriski E. B. Katzenmeyer, Jr R. D. Monitor compounders in Bldg. 426 for heavy metals exposure. Require the wearing of toxic dust respirators during the weighing of heavy metal pigments. Remove the 3M-8710 respirator from service in this area. 3. Proceed with plans to install local exhaust ventilation over lathes in the machine shop. Bldg. 418. 4. Provide welders with a pulmonary function test per BFG Occupational Health Policy #5.06. 5. Monitor carbon disulfide exposures during Curerite 18 processing in Bldg. 423. 6. Review research and development work involving TDI with the Environmental Health Department. 7. Characterize worker exposures to perchloroethylene during fabric testing in Bldg. 423. 8. Monitor for asbestos during preparation of asbestos gaskets in Lab #323, Bldg. 423. Require the wearing of asbestos respirators. Provide exposed technicians with asbestos exam per BFG OHP 5.01. 26120006 DISCUSSION: Three samples of insulation were taken for asbestos analysis. Only one sample (#1) taken from the second floor of the vinyl chloride building contained asbestos. The sample x*as taken from an older section of pipe insulation. Most pipe insulation installed more than 5-10 years ago contains asbestos. The Technical Center must prepare a procedure for the proper handling and disposal of asbestos-containing insulation. This procedure must require the wetting down of all insulation material prior to its removal. Respirators must be worn (3M8710 will provide sufficient protection against asbestos) and all removed material must be disposed of in a bag containing an asbestos warning label. The Avon Lake General Chemical plant has prepared a procedure that may, with modifications, be utilized by the Technical Center. The procedure must apply to all insulation material unless it is known for a fact that the insulation does not contain asbestos. . Pigments containing lead, antimony or cadmium are weighed in Bldg. 426. Although the amount weighed is small and is conducted infrequently, the veighmen should be monitored to determine their exposure. If the exposure is at, or close to the TLV, additional local exhaust venti lation will be required. Regardless of exposure levels, the weighmen must wear toxic dust respirators. The 3M-9900 will provide adequate protection. The 3M-8710 on the other hand, is not approved by NIOSH BFG46483 May 24, 1979 E. C. Martinelli Avon Lake Re: INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE SURVEY - AVON LAKE GC Mr. Thomas Bialke surveyed Avon Lake Chemical operations with respect to industrial hygiene aspects. A copy of his report is attached. Several recommendations have been made which are preventive in nature. I would like to be advised as to their status. v cc: W.T. Gunning G.J. Krupp G.F.Krcmar/E.
