During my recent tour of Bldg. 276, bags of Chrysotile were observed in the compounding area. Chrysotile 437492 is a form of asbestos and is regulated under OSHA CFR 1910.1001. It must be labeled as asbestos and handled with all the precautions afforded other asbestos products.
The rips, tears, etc. in the bags of asbestos exposing the con tents that were observed on the pallets in the compounding area must be repaired in the warehouse before- being brought into the plant to prevent the spreading of asbestos throughout the building.
The exhaust hoods around the c h u m openings should be modified by the addition of a "lip" on the front-side to prevent the spilling of asbestos onto the floor at the base of the churn opening.
A vacuum apparatus should be procured to facilitate the removal of accidental spills of asbestos fiber. This may be accomplished by adding a flex vacuum hose to the existing exhaust ventilation or by obtaining a portable industrial vacuum cleaner with an air filtering system designed to prevent asbestos from being exhausted back into the workplace air. I am attaching some literature on a vacuum designed for brake/clutch service, but it would serve our purpose here.
It was a pleasure to meet you and I look forward to working with you to resolve this matter. Please feel free to contact me on ext. 4224 if you have any questions or comments.
