FLUID HANDLING EQUIPMENT
Zurn engineers are engaged in the continual development of Fluid Handling Equipment to meet the ever-changing re quirements of Industrial, Power Plant and Process Industries for adequate protection of all units and lines in either inter mittent or continuous operation. A Zurn engineer's approach is always a thorough analysis of the need to be met. Write the Zurn Research and Development Department when you need a new device for a specific purpose or standard equip ment for special installations. Because of the broad background of design and production
experience, and the flexibility of Zurn resources, you will find this organization qualified to manufacture the fluid handling equipment contained in this catalog in metals and alloys (cast bronzes, cut or formed stainless steels, carbon steels, cast semi-steel, monel metal, cast iron; coated, plated or lined adaptations of these metals) to meet specific requirements. To provide for corrosion resistance and special flow characteristics, strainer basket material and perforations are usually furnished to specifications as required for each installation. All products included in the Zurn line of Fluid Handling Equipment con form to A.S.M.E. requirements for metal used in pressure vessel parts, and are thoroughly tested.
PIPE LINE STRAINERS
Zurn Pipe Line Strainers are the most effective means of pre venting equipment damage caused by precipitates, crystalline aggregates, dirt (sediment), scale, filings, or other particle impurities often found in pipe lines conveying fluids. Many shut-downs resulting in costly repair bills can be eliminated by their use.
Zurn Pipe Line Strainers protect pipe lines leading to all types of pumps, traps, regulators, aspirators, injectors, control equipment and valves. Zurn Strainers include pipe line strain-
ers; angle type pipe line strainers for high or low pressure; vertical chamber type duplex pipe line strainers; and for low pressure, the duplex pipe line strainer, horizontal tube type; pressure and suction pipe line strainers with removable basket. All pipe line strainer baskets available magnetic type for the removal of ferrous alloy particles from line. They are adaptable for use on gasoline, oil, water, steam, acid or other fluid conveying pipe lines including systems handling slurries or sludges.

most important function
where continuous operation
of a line is required.
It is an integral two valve
unit, both valves operated
simultaneously by a large
marine type hand wheel.
This insures ease of opera
tion and effects uninter
rupted and unrestricted flow
at all positions of the wheel.
All flow passages through

mit free flow of fluid with minimum pressure drop.
The strainer basket is set
eccentrically, with respect
to the basket chamber, so that the flow section is proportional to the flow
needs at all points, thus minimizing pressure drop. (The usual practice of
setting the strainer basket concentrically, with respect to the basket chamber,
creates a condition of unproportional flow sections with respect to flow needs, thereby increasing fluid friction loss). Regular 6:1 ratio or as specified by
increased "D" dimension.
Valve seats are removable and valve stems are supported at both ends for
accurate, permanent alignment. Covers are removable for lifting out the perforated strainer baskets. Large handhole above each valve assembly for
servicing valves without removing strainer from line. There are no loose
parts on cover. The Zurn Duplex Pipe Line Strainer is a sturdy, efficiently designed
mechanism that will safeguard pumps and equipment from fouling caused
by sediment accumulations in the pipe lines. These units are thoroughly
tested hydrostatically before leaving the factory.
Available in cast bronze, steel, semi-steel and cast iron. Strainer
baskets can be perforated brass, monel or other specified metal.
Mesh or magnetic types furnished to specifications.

REMOTE VALVE CONTROL BOXES AND ASSEMBLIES
Zurn Remote Valve Control Boxes provide a modern method of operating inaccessible or hard-to-get-at valves.
Valves located below floor level, close to the ceiling or walls and partitions, inside tanks or processing vessels, or in the midst of complicated piping and equipment, can easily be operated and controlled by the use of a Zurn Re mote Valve Control Assembly, such as is illustrated on this page. This assembly includes a Remote Valve Control Box, and all essential parts for hooking up the control mechanism with the valve that is to be operated, including cast iron rod coupling to fit on hand wheel of valve when specified. These Remote Valve Control Assemblies can be installed to operate with rod or pipe connected by universal joints or with flexible cable as illustrated, for transmitting torque to the handle of the valve unit that is to be opened and closed. The hazards of chain operated valves can be avoided by using these assemblies.
Zurn Remote Valve Control Boxes are particularly adaptable for Industrial, Power Plant, and Processing Industries installations where large numbers and many different types of valves are in constant use.

LINT INTERCEPTOR
9 FIG. Z-901--This interceptor is especially adaptable to the requirements of the textile in dustry and laundries and industrial plants where lint and wiping waste is likely to get into drain age lines and clog them. It should be used in connection with pumps and in water works and swim ming pool installations, and in water and oil service mains. The interception function is accom plished by a perforated metal strainer equipped with an open or closed bottom, brass or copper basket of suitable mesh. Strainers are furnished plain or galvanized. The intercepting basket is removable, singularly easy to inspect and to clean; however with the open bottom basket, all dirt and sediment can be brought out through the bottom blow-off connection. It cannot be come air bound, as the openings through the high points in the basket are on a line with the top of the pipe. This interceptor is built for operation with working pressures up to ISO pounds. Cast iron body and bolted cover dura-coated. Available with flanged and I.P.S. connections; sizes: 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 inches.
Fig. Z-901
VOLATILE LIQUIDS INTERCEPTING DRAIN
The Zurn Volatile Liquids Intercepting Drain was specially designed for installations where volatile fluids, having a lower specific gravity than water, i.e, gasoline, oil, naptha, etc. are dis charged into the drain. It is a safeguard against the costly hazards of explosion and fire.
The Zurn Volatile Liquids Intercepting Drain is recommended for installation in automotive plants, railroad roundhouses, dry cleaning establishments, heat treating plants, garages, service stations and other locations wherever inflammable and explosive liquids are used or dispensed.
The large central retaining chamber provides low downward velocity of fluids passing through drain. Fluids are evenly distributed over entire area by dispersing action of safety seal arrangement. Thus a high efficiency of interception and a large retaining capacity are attained.
The extreme length of the Annular Level Maintaining Weirs provides a constant basic liquid level in the drain. This level rises in the central section of the drain as lighter than water liquids accumulate. When these liquids have reached the retaining capacity of the drain, the level has reached the circular skirt of the Automatic Signal Control. This causes a secondary liquid seal and an air lock at the Safety Seal which very noticeably retards the inflow of liquids giving positive indication that drain should be cleaned.
The drain is very easily cleaned by removing the grate, safety seal and signal control assembly, and baffle casting. The container casting is then lifted out and the volatile liquids poured off; then the water and sludge is removed.

CAST IRON INTERCEPTORS
FOR WAX, GREASE, FATS, AND OTHER LOW DENSITY INSOLUBLES
A positive means of avoiding clogged drains and contamination of sewage outlets.--Figs. Z-l 170, Z-l 171.
The primary purpose of a Grease Interceptor is to assure free flowing drainage through pipe lines at all times--by intercepting, separating, accumulating and recovering grease from waste water lines.
The ZURN GREASEPTOR METHOD, employing the principle of flotation, is the simplest and most positive means of accom plishing this purpose.
The first essential in the operation of this principle is the elimination of turbulence of incoming waste water, allowing the grease to separate from, and rise to the surface of, the water.
Proper construction and specially designed flow control features of the Zurn Grease Interceptor effect maximum separation.
Efficient grease interception is necessary: 1. Reduces plumbing-drainage maintenance costs by keeping lines free of damaging grease. 2. Salvaged waste grease and fats can be sold to rendering plants. 3. Waste grease is vitally needed now as a basic ingredient of war explosives, glycerine, soap and medicines.
4. Guarantees maximum capacity operation of sewage disposal plants, thus protecting life and health of community.
THERE ARE TWO FACTORS THAT SHOULD DETERMINE THE SIZE AND TYPE
OF GREASE INTERCEPTOR SELECTED:
1. The quantity of waste water normally contained in the fixture served by the interceptor, and
the period of elapsed time necessary to empty the fixture--RATED FLOW CAPACITY.
2. The expected volume of grease in waste water discharged by the fixture over a period of time,
and the practical time interval of cleaning the interceptor--RATED GREASE CAPACITY.
Caution should be exercised in the choice of an interceptor since its efficiency is retarded in
proportion to excessive flow through the chamber. Guard against undersizing!
GREASEPTOR
THE ZURN GREASDICATOR
The GREASDICATOR is an easily operated slide-rule em ploying the above factors in sizing and selecting the proper Greaseptor for a specific installation. Proven mathematical formulae have been used to compile the data and information it contains. As a result, selections and sizes are guaranteed to inter cept the required volume of grease.

SOLIDS INTERCEPTOR
INTERCEPTS PARTICLES OF PLASTERjlPlASTICS, METAL CHIPS, GLASS, AND OTHER SOLIDS WHICH CAUSE DRAIN CLOGGING--FIGURE Z-l 180
The Zurn Solids Interceptor is a compact, efficient device that performs an intercepting service beyond anything obtainable with old style traps or improvised devices. It is sanitary, easy to inspect and to keep clean. With a single motion the cover may be removed, providing access to the sediment container which is readily lifted out for cleaning.
The Zurn Solids Interceptor is engineered and built to perform a specific protective func tion where solids frequently clog drain lines. The intercepting function is accomplished by two perforated metal strainers which intercept the solids in the waste water as it passes through the interceptor body.
In addition, they serve as baffles to quiet the turbulence of the water, permitting the solids to drop more readily to the bottom of the sediment container where they are accumulated for removal. The inlet being located approximately 4 inches from the bottom of the in terceptor directs the water upwards near the top on the opposite side, thereby leaving the collected solids undisturbed. Because of water seal in this interceptor, it also serves as a trap as required by plumbing codes.
Zurn Solids Interceptors are available in two sizes.
