You arc encour aged to bring members of your Local Emergency Planning Committee and/or State Emergency Response Commission. The success of the CAER program has had a positive impact on chemical plant communities. Speaking with citizens in the communities where we operate has offered new opportuni ties for us to understand the interests and concerns of our neighbors. As companies con tinue to initiate community protection pro grams, CAER is beginning to encompass issues such as warehousing, transportation, shelceringin-place and public health. In addition, communities, media, health profes sionals and civic organizations are noticeably iore vocal about the chemical industry and peases from the facilities. They are exercising Tneir "right-to-know" about chemicals in their communities. At the same time, your companies' communications programs have also grown since Title III, but more work remains to be done in CAER programs and Title III activities. This conference will highlight changes in several CMA programs on the safe use of chemicals in the community. We will discuss common chal lenges facing chemical industry leaders, and offer solutions. A representative of a civic organ ization, members of the scientific community and a reporter will also discuss their concerns and what they expect of our industry.
