I thought it had been done by a high school student of the modern environment, and I was totally unprepared to find that it really originated within the official group. Nevertheless, Z reviewed it with care and reasonably good manners. Z cannot but believe that the eventual verdict as to the further use of lead antiknock compounds will be adverse. There are things which could be done to make such a verdict unrealistic, 1 believe. Z wonder what is the status of the apparatus for removing the lead from the exhausted gas at the tailpipe, and Z wonder also what will be done to provide suitable transportation in cities in substitution for automobiles, or at least a part of them. It seems to me that unless these things are done, there is little chance for the survival of lead-containing antiknock preparation^ .^rhaps it is too late, even now,to do either of these things in time to seree this industry. Certainly, however, the problem of transportation will have to be met soon by sensible and feasible measures, and it seems unutterably stupid to postpone the day until there is a state of emergency. Z realize full well that this is the way things have been done, but must it be so always? Z wonder. Z shall be back in Cincinnati to stay (except for necessary excursions of one type or another) on March 3. Incidentally, you would be wise to advise your secretary that Z am no longer the Director of Kettering Laboratory. Bay Suskind will not object, since he and Z know and like each other. But others, noting your manner of addressing me;might misunderstand. Z Just work in the Laboratory, but have nothing whatever to do with its way of operating.
