OFFICE OF WATER ARP HAZARDOUS MATERIALS
f i t 1 , .'JSgfc. -
Dear Mr. Mavri:
For yoiir inform ation, enclosed are the analytical results for the asbestos samples collected a t th e International H arvester Louisville Foundry in 'September of 197$, as p art of the asbestos sampling program, E ffluent Guidelines Division, U.S. Environ m ental Protection Agency.
.m These results, along with those of over 250 participating industrial facilities, will be used to determ ine the significance of the discharge of asbestos and the perform ance of possible tre a tm e n t technologies. Since th ese results represent only screening-type analyses, interpretation should be prim arily qualitative (i.e., indicative of th e presence or absence of the chrysotile form of asbestos). The quantitative m easures are estim ates of .concentration and should not be interp reted as absolute values* A la rg e r number of facilities may be selected for future sampling to verify .these initial results and to begin to compile a data base for th e development of guidelines for allowable levels of asbestos fibers in industrial w astestream s.
The analytical technique used in counting the asbestos fibers is a transmission electron microscope procedure which uses selected area electron diffraction for identification of the fiber types. Asbestos fibers of the chrysotile variety have been selected as the screening param eter since chrysotile comprises approximately 95 percent of all commercial asbestos.
The attached sh eet provides a synopsis of the analytical results from samples collected a t your facility . In most cases where raw w ater sam ples were taken, th e sam ples w ere prepared for analysis but held pending review of d ata from other sampling points. If these data show positive identification of chrysotile fibers in th e w astestream , th e raw water sampleis) will then be scheduled for analysis. You will receive a copy of these additional analytical results following Agency review.
A list of definitions is enclosed for your inform ation. If you have any questions concerning th e analytical results of th eir interpretation, please contact Priscilla H oltzdaw a t 202/426-777.
