What we do know is the risks of climate change are real, and we need solutions that are equally real. Experts from across the political spectrum agree. America is in the midst of an energy revolution of its own. We are the world's number one producer of natural gas and oil, and are less dependent on foreign governments as a result. Our domestic energy abundance has helped boost the economy and keep energy costs low for American families while making the nation stronger and more secure in the world. What's particularly astounding is the fact that U.S. world leadership in natural gas and oil production is accompanied by world leadership in cutting greenhouse gas emissions. U.S. emissions are at their lowest level in a generation - thanks largely to the increased use of natural gas in power generation while the rest of the world's emissions are up 50 percent. Natural gas and oil are the leading sources of energy in the U.S., serving as fuels and foundational elements in countless products consumers use every day - and they are projected to remain our leading energy sources for decades to come. Indeed, natural gas is the reliable, essential partner for renewable energies such as wind and solar. State and federal policymakers' goal must be to balance record consumer energy demand, environmental protection, and affordability for every American family. Natural gas and oil in America are produced cleaner, safer and better today than ever before. We will evaluate any proposal that comes out of this new effort and work with members of both parties to strike that balance, and we will continue to deliver for the American people. Sincerely, Mike Sommers President & CEO API Protecting Workers and the Environment with Enhanced Safety Standards API has created and continually updates more than 700 standards over its 100-year history to enhance the safety, efficiency and sustainability of natural gas and oil operations. The newest of these updates is to Recommended Practice 54 (RP 54), which sets procedures to advance and maintain a safe and healthy work environment in drilling and well servicing operations. In short, RP 54 is another illustration of industry's continuous effort to improve safety for its employees, surrounding communities and the environment. Learn more here.
