On Wednesday* April 10th, 154 coils were produced averaging 10 tons each. The KE and Foothill forces are available each day following a night's rolling to perform whatever tasks are requested in order to prepare for the evening operation. At the B.O.F., the large bridge crane in the charging aisle is now operable and has been completed in time to meet a milestone require ment for the start of vessel assembly. At present, the lance crane is operable and the two large teeming aisle cranes are under installa tion as is the small maintenance crane between columns E and F. Good weather permitted important steel erection that opened up a consider able amount of work in the way of concrete floors, roof decks and siding. Armco is now using the bridge crane in the mold yard and are storing large molds. We are also going to use a portion of the mold yard as an unloading area for vessel components for the B.O.F. At the stripper building, the stripper crane is now being used fay Armco to strip large ingots and with the exception of a few minor items this facility is complete. Soaking pits progress has continued in a satisfactory manner and the electrical portion of the work was given a needed boost with a con siderable increase in electrical manpower. Completion of the second ingot crane i3 now well underway and arrangements are being made to complete lighting in the hot (temperature) areas since the soaking pits light-off is not too far away. All phases of construction work progressed well in the slab mill during the period with sufficient manpower in most areas. The completion sche dule for the slab mill was reviewed in detail during the past two weeks and was presented to Armco on Wednesday, April 10th. The end date of the schedule was revised from June 18th to June 25th. The first date was gives, to Armco back in early February as an anticipated slab rolling date.. Regardless of this schedule, however, all field forces with the help of ProJect and Armco personnel are making every effort to complete the alalymill as rapidly as possible since we are all aware that the new hot strip mill could be using slabs from this source in the not too dis tant future. It was stated and agreed that we would continue with a reasonable spot overtime effort. KEN 004375 WEEKLY FIELD ACTIVITY REPORT Week Ending April 9* 1968 GENERAL COMMENTS (Continued) In the new hot strip mill, efforts are continuing to complete miscellaneous work by area priority. The work effort in the hot strip mill is divided between punch list clean-up, modification work and rework on failures of vendor components. One of the critical items in the latter category has been the ID and FD fans in the waste heat boiler. Despite considerable work done to date the problem of overheating and wiping of bearings has not been satisfactorily solved. Although all the high bay lighting in the green coil storage building is not complete, sufficient work has been accomplished whereby Armco per sonnel can operate on coil storage and load-out without interference or interruption. In the pickle line, McGraw, KE and the lower tier subcontractors, such as brick layers, have made good progress. The pickle tanks are now set on line #4 and partially set on line #5, main floor slabs are being placed, and considerable amount, of line #4 equipment has been placed over the anchor bolts. The arrival of information, materials, and equipment along with the signed piping contract has put us in a posi- tion where progress in several areas can be expected. The pickle lines schedule was reviewed and it was determined that the key to meeting completion dates rested in the main with the piping and electrical subcontractors. Recent problems have been encountered with the equip ment erection contractor in which problems were corrected in the areas of lack of supervision, tools and equipment. On Thursday, April 4th, the insulators walked off the job over a dispute with Owens Corning Fiberglas Company concerning hiring an improver as an insulator helper. The problem was solved and the men returned to work the following day. /GLR PROJECT PBQgttSS 1. 7148 - HOT STRIP MILL 1.3 Structural and Miscellaneous Steel: An average work force of twenty ironworkers was maintained in the hot strip mill during the period. On Wednesday night, 22 coils were made followed by 71 coils on Thursday and 75 coils on Friday. During the . Friday night operations, two slab3 while being pushed at the charge end of furnace #1 upended and damaged refractory in the nosing portion of the furnace. Furnace #1 was then shut down for repairs. Repairs were com pleted on the induced draft fan for unit #2 which included installation: of new bearings delivered by Worthington on Saturday. By Sunday night furnace #2 and boiler #2 was in service for rolling operations. On Mon day night, 33 slabs were coiled followed by 72 slabs on Tuesday night. The refractory repair work in furnace #1 is now in progress and is ex pected to be complete by Monday, April 15th. An inspection is in pro gress to check the forced draft and induced draft fan bearings for unit #1 during this down period. 1.7 Piping: Kaiser pipefitters have now completed the pickling of the oxygen piping in the hot strip mill together with the piping from the hot strip mill through the green coil storage building.
