McCarthy,,Medical Division REMINDER ' ~ MEDICAL ASPECTS OF OSBA REGULATIONS CONCERNING ASBESTOS EXPOSURE The Du Pont Engineering standard No. 3-4-T describes the measure ment and control of asbestos dust exposure. It meats OSHA regulations. However, it omits certain paragraphs which involve the Medical Division. It may be well to summarise these medical aspects to supplement your engineering standards. 1. Medical'Examinations (cf. Section 1910.93a, paragraph "j") In addition to preplacament and termination medical examina tions, each asbestos worker must have an annual physical exam (chest x-ray, pulmonary function test, and history of symptomatology} . We should not overlook the annual exam for those who are 40 years old or younger. 2. Records Sampling records for personnel monitoring and/or environmental surveys are to be kept for 3 years. Medical examination records are to be maintained for 20 years. 3. Sampling Frequency Monitoring is required to determine the employee's exposure The intervela between sampling shall not exceed 6 months.
