Burslek Dean of University Administration University of Cincinnati Cincinnati 21, Ohio Dear Mr. Bursiek: I am assembling herein, for your information and that of the Board of Directors of the University, the facts and expectations concerning the sources of the funds required to cover the anticipated cost of the new wing of The Kettering Laboratory. Several circumstances have prevented me from clearing this mutter satisfactorily before the completion of the plans and specifications, r my latest difficulty having been the urgent necessity of a flying trip through Western Europe on behalf of several of the industrial sponsors of the Laboratory, from which I have just returned. These circumstances have not interfered seriously with my bringing our affairs before our sponsors and sounding them out on their views of the feasibility of our plan. I have not had an opportunity, however, to get down to cases in the personal interviews that are required for that purpose, and, therefore, the job is unfinished. I expect to obtain the necessary pledges for specific sums within the next three weeks to such an extent as to cover the large proportion of the anticipated expenditure. The sum required for the construction of the new wing, and for the mechanical services (air conditioning etc.) has been estimated at $1,750,000.00 or thereabouts (I do not have the architect's final estimate, but this can be taken as the approximate goal.) The sums of money now formally pledged and made available to the University amount to $450,000.00 from the following sources: Hamilton County Ethyl Corporation Procter and Gamble Co. In the aggregate the estimate of funds to be made available is not far off. In the further list below are a number of companies that have not been approached but are open to such approach and may be expected to adopt a favorable attitude toward some contribution on their part. The relationships of the companies to the Kettering Laboratory are or have been such that their interest in one or another of our activities is known to exist. The extent of their interest in the practical terms here concerned can be explored during the next several months. For a variety of reasons I have wished to obtain the entire sums necessary to carry out our present plans from industry. I am assured, however, of the interest of the U.S. Public Health Service in our present and future activities. Our working relatlonshiptwith this group are such that we can obtain financial assistance if it is needed. I have merely explored this possibility without initiating any action. The other source of funds is one which I should be entirely unwilling to mention except in complete confidence. It seems necessary at this point for the reason that I should like to remove any removable obstacle to favorable action by the Board of Directors of the University at the earliest possible time. I expect to make a contribution of funds of the order of $100, (XX).00 to the University within the present calendar year for the promotion of the activities of The Kettering Laboratory. In addition, my own and Mrs. Kehoe's wills leave, the bulk of our estates to the University for this purpose in a trust fund. I hope these funds will be available for educational purposes, but if they should be required for present purposes, they can be made available within the limits of the trust agreement. I am not suggesting that I am in a position to guarantee the financial security of the University in relation to the presently proposed expenditure. Rather I am indicating to you and to the Board of Directors that I have not been acting irresponsibly in the development of this project up to the present point.
