A-TM SuLgecn February 19, 1985 HS&EA Industrial Hygiene Asbestos Monitoring at Institute Plant Attached are the results of asbestos exposure monitoring conducted on February 6, 1985 while construction employees stripped approximately 250 ft^ of old insulation material from the 201 still column at the Cellosize Unit (Bldg. 160). Three construction employees were used on the job with two insulators to strip the insulation and one laborer to clean up and bag the stripped insulation. All employees were protected by usage of cartridge respirators, coveralls, gloves, and boots. The work area was barricaded, signs posted, and a water spray used to wet the insulation prior to stripping. Use of the water spray was emphasized even though most of the insulation was found to be frozen due to cold weather. All samples were found to contain levels of asbestos fibers below the permissible exposure level of 2.0 fibers per c.c. of air. Monitoring was conducted throughout the entire period of time necessary for completion of the job. None of the employees involved with the job did any further work involving asbestos after completion of the job, therefore, it was possible to compute the time weighted average (TWA) exposures for the entire eight hour work day. Please notify employees of their exposure results. If we can be of further assistance, please contact us on either extension 3750 or extension 5904.
