Box WC 4900 Dayton, Ohio 45449 Dear Mr. Storer: On March 17, 1981, a visit was made to the above company in response to a request for an industrial hygiene survey for carbon monoxide fumes. I understand this request was precipitated by a formal grievance filed by the Local Union, concerning such funes oeing given off possibly by a forced air gas furnace, which supplies heat to the area of the eight warehouse loading/off loading docks. An Energetics Science Inc., Carbon Monoxide Analyzer, Series 2000, portable survey meter, SN1536, calibration date 2/81 was placed in the aforementioned areas to take direct readings of carbon monoxide fumes. Ambient levels of 12 - 15 parts per million of carbon monoxide were detected. The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) has established that carbon monoxide (when averaged over an 8-hcur workday, 40 hour work week) levels are not harmful to the majority of the population at 50 parts per million (ppm). This is also the current Occupational Safety and Health Standard. However, it must be recognized that there is a wide variation in individual susceptibility, and some people may suffer discomfort or aggravation from concentrations below the established threshold limit value. In fact, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Heilth has proposed the limit be decreased to 35 parts per million. With the use of electric forklifts in the warehouse I can see no health hazardous levels of carbon monoxide culminating. Even though no carbon monoxide fumes were detected, and no unusual odors noted. It Is good practice to hava such devices checked periodically to insure they are , operating properly, and do not present a fire or explosive hazard.
