Preliminary Survey of Materials and Supplies Used Principally in PLANT MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS and Purchased and/or Stored by CENTRAL STORES Preface. This is the final preliminary report covering major areas of activity at the Baton Rouge plant. These reports have been prepared to provide background information for the General Survey by Industrial Hygiene. The Preliminary Reports do not undertake to make any determinations of hazards, beyond indications that may have been evident when information was being gathered. Adjacent to the storage areas of Central Stores are the shops for sandblasting, metalworking, woodworking, welding, painting, etc. These of course utilize many of the materials obtained and kept on hand by Central Stores. ETC 01527 Shop activities of course come under the regular surveil lance of plant Safety officers. However the shops utilize a great many of the materials purchased and stored by Central Stores. Accordingly Industrial Hygiene personnel are concerned to the extent of insuring that incidental or routine exposures in shop areas to these materials are not hazardous to the workmen or the environs. Acknowledgments. Most of the materials listed in this Report are used in cleaning, repair, and general maintenance of plant properites, as well as in limited kinds of con struction work. Very comprehensive and detailed lists were collected for me through the good offices of J. F. Hamilton. Mr. Hamilton enlisted the assistance of Messrs. R. E. Conrad, 0. M. Kirk, R. B. Holloway, J. L. Guillot, L. R. Parker and J. H. Starnes. Mr. L. C. Langlois provided special lists from the Central Stores offices. We thank them all. Foreword. I have undertaken to sift and edit the lists, which contain a total of many hundreds of items, in order to concentrate attention on what appeared to bethe relatively more hazardous classes of materials. (The complete lists as supplied to us are on file in Medical). Hardware, for example, and nearly all non-volatile, non combustible solid materials were omitted. On each item we have tried to furnish enough information to identify it well enough that either the appropriate Area Maintenance Superintendent or Central Stores can provide the name of its supplier whenever this should be needed. Because of other equally pressing matters the issuance of this report has been delayed about a year, and I am sorry that this is so. Accordingly it is likely to be somewhat out-of-date in some respects, probably brand names especially, but these instances should be readily apparent when applicable. The western end comprises the large expanse of shops. Cylinder gases are stored outside in concrete-block bays. (See area map attached.) Central Stores provides space for many process chemi cals - utilized in manufacturing - largely as a service. Central Stores has an efficient computer system which keeps account of new materials received and also of all withdrawals, providing a continuous inventory. Other notes: 1. All packages receive numbers which identify them by Item Number (corresponding to those on Inventory Records), and also locate them by Bins. 2. Most packaged products carry, whenever appropriate, warning labels and first-aid information. (Writer's note: - Whenever it becomes practical, it could be valuable to reinforce somehow the awareness of employees about these printed instructions). 3. It was noted that most products are labeled to conform to DOT shipping regulations. Accordingly, Central Stores may oftenon request be able to make available to Ethyl shipping staff personnel, for possible use as a model, the labelling adopted by the ' company's suppliers. 4.
