McMakin - 2009 Date June 12, 1987 0n9",aCl''9 Depc- EM&TS - HS&EA Area Industrial Hygiene Sub,ecc Asbestos Exposure Monitoring A' Attached are the results of asbestos exposure monitoring for three days on insulators at the Institute Plant while removing asbestos on a 3-inch steam line and a 4-inch product line at the #1 dock area in an enclosure. The area enclosed was 5.5 x 6.5 x 200 feet or 7150 ft^. HEPA exhaust was 120,000 ft^ per hour which is equivalent to 16 air changes per hour. The area enclosed was along the roadway and the dike wall between the #1 and #2 docks. The area was barricaded while enclosure was in place. Seven out of eight personal exposure samples exceeded the 0.2 fiber/cc permissible exposure level standard and the eighth exceeded the 0.1 fiber/cc action level standard. We encourage you to use supplied air respirators as much as possible in the asbestos abatement procedures. Please communicate to your employees the need for the utmost care and precaution while removing asbestos. Employees wore two pair of coveralls, headcovers, boots, gloves and AO R57-A half-face HEPA cartridge respirators. No street clothes were worn.
