The persons responsible for conducting these inventories may not be as able to recognize the potential hazards in production or storage areas as the individuals who work there each day. Listed below are the types of hazards which may present themselves to an individual taking inventory. Be on the alert to look for hazards and take steps to control them. HAZARD ACTION 1. Injuries have resulted from drums falling from pallets stacked on top of pallets containing less then four drums. - Have pallets restacked so that each has four drums on it before an other is placed on top. 2. Injuries have also resulted from bags falling from un stable stacks of pallets containing bagged material 1' Restack bags or break stacks down into individual pallets of material. 3. Warehouses may be dark due to poor or inoperable light ing. Falls may result from the inability of individuals to see clearly. Have the plant relamp where necessary or use auxiliary lighting. 4. Falls may result from trip ping over debris. Conduct a housekeeping inspection just prior to the inventory correct any problems uncovered. 5. Employees visiting operating departments or warehouses should be informed if ha zards may exist where they will be walking. Correction should be made promptly when a hazard is discovered. a. Slippery floors or stairs. Wash down or use absorbent material to clean up the spill and provide additional traction. b. Damaged pallets may be in use. They may con tain : Look for these hazards and have the damaged pallet discarded or repaired. Avoid walking on pallets. 906-01 REV *-60 *-00 0124 1. Exposed nails 2. Broken boards 3 unstEit 1 s ^ ^25s 6. Falls from heights. 7. Injuries can result from forklift trucks. 8. Injuries resulting from failure to wear proper personal protective equipment. 9. Confined space entries. 0125 Page 2 of 2 a. Do not permit climbing up stacks of pallets. Use a forklift to bring pallets down to floor level for counting. b. Check the condition of hand rails or ladders and repair if required. c. Care should be taken to provide guarding for holes in floors where equipment has been removed, excavations, and construction areas. a. Be alert when approaching intersections and entering warehouse areas through doorways. b. Caution drivers that there will be visitors in the area. c. Do not use and do not raermit others to use the forks of the forklift or a pallet on the forks as a man lift. Only a man lift platform built for that purpose and securely attached to the truck may be used. d. Pedestrians should be kept clear of the forklift while loads are being raised or lowered to avoid being struck by part of the load if it falls. Employees involved in taking inven tories must wear the equipment which is prescribed for the area in which they are working. Sampling and tank measurements are better left to the individ uals who regularly perform these operations. If this is not possible the individuals should be given specific instructions in sample taking or tank measurement and be issued and trained in the use of the required personal pro tective equipment. Persons involved in inventories are not exempt from any of the require ments for confined space entry. Safe work permit, gas tests, safety belts, air equipment and other local requirements should be met.
