All warped and irregular boards must be firmly nailed before bevel strip ping is applied. To provide maximum insulation against heat and cold and to provide a suitable even surface upon which to apply USG Asbestos Cement Siding Shingles, the wall should be covered with USG Cushion Felt Bevel stripping may be omitted if USG Cushion Felt is used. Moulding Finish frames with wood mold to cover exposed edges of the siding shingles. Lintels should be flashed with copper. See detail No. 31. Use metal flashing, see detail No. 32 & 33. Caulking All door and window frames should be adequately caulked with Asbestos Caulking Cement ap plied with a pressure gun. Cutting and Punching When USG Asbestos Cement Siding Shingles are to be cut. it is recommendod that the shingle be scored along the line to be cut. This can be ac complished by using a comer of a hatchet blade or any other sharp instrument drawing it across the line until a deep score is made, using a straight edge to guide the instrument Then by placing the shingle with the scored line over a straight edge, strike the overhanging part several sharp blows with a mallet or hand, and the shingle will easily break along the Bcored line. When the shingles are to be fitted over a circu lar or angular shape, punch a succession of holes with a pointed nail punch along the line to be cut If additional nail holes are required, they can be punched with nail punch or else drilled with a hand drilL Where a large amount of cutting and punching is required we recommend the use of an Asbestos Shingle Cutter. Handling USG Asbestos Cement Siding Shingles should be handled carefully and kept in a dry place. Shingles on the job should be stacked on edge, at least four inches from the ground, not more than four tiers high, and kept dry with suitable covering. Over Gypsum Board Sheathing When applying asbestos shingles over gypsum board sheathing. horizontal wood nailing strips must be placed over the shoathing, spacing them according to the size of the shingle and the length it is laid to the weather. Wide spacing of the shingle units conserves material and reduces application costs. The long, narrow design of these shingles gives the appearance of height to one-story buildings and materially increases their charm. No. 400 -- VERTICAL SIDING Wood Grain Texture. Sidelap: l1/]" Space Fillers Small strips that fit the space between the siding shingles and under the overlaying shingle may be used to provide additional protection from weather. They may also be applied one inch below the butt of the overlaying shingle, thus providing another design with but one type of shingle, a design that accents the staggered effect of which so many home owners approve. [20| ~3 o o O vfl O' USG Asbestos Cement Siding NO. 400 VERTICAL SIDING USG Vertical Asbestos Cement Shingles are selfaligning, having holes and notches spaced for proper application. Shingles may be applied from either left or right. First Course Apply W'x 1" cant strip along the bottom of the side wall to insure a straight starting course. Cut full size shingles to dimension and apply upper 10" section to provide one-eighth (Vs) inch overhang at butt to form a drip edge. Nail securely in lower nail holes. Proceed with application of cut shingles, spacing units six (6) inches apart and securely naiL see detail No. 47. Second and Succeeding Courses Apply a full size shingle to overlap the sides of each starter shingle one and one-half (IV2) inches and nail securely through both the top and under lying shingle in naif holes provided. See detail No. 48. Proceed with application of full-sized shingles in a similar manner, see detail No. 49. At the end of each course shingle must be cut to fit and new holes punched to correspond to holes punched in the shingle at factory. Note that small notches in the shingle provide for rapid and accurate align ment of nail holes. FILLER STRIPS Filler strips may be used in coniunction with Verti cal Siding Shingles to provide additional staggered effect. First Course Apply a lW`x 1" cant strip along the bottom of the wall to insure a straight starting course. Apply a joint strip folded vertically at the comer, see detail 51. Start application with a full-size shingle, ex tending the butt tyg" below the cant strip to form a drip edge. Upper nails are then se cured with joint strip inserted at vertical joint as before described. Punch nail holes as required.. use asbestos sidinITshingles Wavy Qutt or Thajtch (butt X ~r X z nzr X X APPLICATION OF SUCCEEDING COURSES No. 52 APPLICATION OF FIRST COURSE No. 51 and middle galvanized nails at the head of the shingle. Before nailing at the opposite end insert a joint strip beneath the shingle so that the strip cen ters under the vertical joint of the shingle and the adjacent shingle. Securely nail the third galvan ized nail in the shingle and continue application of subsequent shingles in a similar manner to the end of the course. Butts of shingles to be secured with Special Alloy Nails driven through holes pro vided. Nail snugly but do not drive nails tight. Second and Succeeding Courses shingle one (1) inch. Continue application with lull size shingles, butted closely together. Complete succeeding courses as described, breaking vertical joints in alternating courses. Caution: Use only Special Alloy Nails, furnished with shingles for face nailing the butts of the shingles. Two methods of finishing comer joints are used in the application of USG Wavy Butt and Thatch Butt Asbestos Cement Siding. Wood comer boards may be used, or shingles may be butted together at the comers, alternating position of joints in each row to provide a woven effocL See detail No. 51. Cut a full size shingle to provide for staggered joint application and A formed metal flashing strip is recommended for outside and inside comers to provide a true comer and additional weather protection.
