TO: P. M. SPICER, PROCESS MANAGER - CATALYTIC CRACKING UNIT SUBJECT: 6" CCGO LINE AND 8" J-337 FILL The 6" CCGO line and the 8" J-337 fill line are both asphalt/asbestos wrapped. On August 19, 1986 at about 1300 the Cat. Cracker hit these lines at approximately 330F. This was hot enough to melt off the wrapped coating. Craftsman working in the rack notified the CR-3 shift foreman who in turn notified the CCU shift foreman. Inspection of J-337 fill to CR-3 pump pad shows extensive breakdowns and failures in wrappings. The 6" CCGO line from the CR-3 pump pad to CCU shows to be in the same condition. The integrity of these lines in their present condition is very poor. Several areas have exposed bare carbon steel while others have the same condition with water traps. It is only a matter of time till leaks develop from external corrosion. It is our recommendation that this line be repaired in the same manner as was the DU-2 XHGO line to J-323. 1. Painters remove all asbestos wrap by hand scraping. When wrap has been removed, Inspection will look at line for any signs of corro sion. This inspection can only be as good as the initial cleaning. 2. After all asbestos wrap has been removed, the line can then be sandblasted and prepared for painting. 3. Paint p.ipe in accordance with the DuPont Program. 4. Final inspection will be performed after painting. Historically these pipe racks are in the poorest condition East of SHCU and North of Cooling Water Tower #11. CRACKING UNIT SUBJECT: 16" - 65# STEAM LINE During a recent piperack inspection it was noted that the 16" - 65# steam line in the piperack between "15th" Street and "12th" Street had several areas of exposed insulation where the seal had been broken. This line has asbestos insulation and should be repaired by resealing the insulation as soon as possible to minimize exposure to personnel and the environment. The line is flagged with Orange flagging tape; specific locations of repairs needed can be obtained from the appropriate main tenance foreman when he surveys the line for manpower and material estimates.
