At our Munro asbestos mine near Matheson, Ontario, develop ment of underground mining, begun in 1954, was completed and underground production started. Eventually this method will replace open-pit mining at the Munro mine.
On November 28 the Southern Rhodesian asbestos mines of Rhodesian Asbestos Limited, in which Canadian Johns-Manville Company, Ltd., held a 51 percent interest, were sold to Rhodesian & General Asbestos Corporation (PVT) Limited, a Southern Rhodesian subsidiary of Turner & Newall, of Manchester, England. In making the sale Johns-Manville acted for all the stockholders of Rhodesian Asbestos Limited. This sale resulted in a loss, most of which was absorbed in 1956.
As a result of expansion and improvement in quality at the Jeffrey mine at Asbestos, Quebec, the Munro mine in Northern Ontario and development of the new Advocate deposit in Newfound land, the Southern Rhodesian operations were no longer required.
