PCB Level In Sewers May losses at 4.5'lb/day from operating departments and the incinerator compared to 1.0 lb/day of last month. A. Aroclor Department. PCB losses increased to 4.4 lb/day from 1.0 lb/day of last month. B. Incinerator losses remained low at 0.1 lb/day. C. Waste Treatment Influent. Losses averaged 4 lb/day compared to 5 lb/day of last month. D. Waste Treatment Effluent. Losses averaged 3 lb/day compared to 4 lb/day of last month. II. Project Status All projects are complete. The HC1 Scrubber operated satisfactory throughout the month. Water consumption has been reduced and air blowing has been eliminated, however water recycle had to be cut back slightly to avoid excessive temperature. Some air is withdrawn from the vapor spaces of the intermediate storage tanks by the small drowning jet. III. Program Status The HC1 pressure control valve opened 10 times for very short periods during the month. Losses from the department were higher than normal. The source of this material was traced to the drowning jet which pulls air from the intermediate storage tanks and some entrained material was drained from the duct between the demister and the jet. The demister however appears to be in good shape. Losses have declined to 1 lb/day since the duct was drained, and the accumulation in the duct has not recurred. DSW 353138 STLCOPCB4085329 J. R. Program Status (Cont'd) Department 217 used the entire output of HC1 from Dept. 246 but negligible amounts of PCB appeared in the sewer which receives the waste liquor from the C/S scrubber. This suggests that the amount of PCB in the HC1 gas has been reduced by the new (Aroclor) scrubber to a level which is well within the capacity of the C/S scrubber. No PCB was found in the Department 236 sewer. This indicates that the pressure control system effectively prevents the passage of HC1 from Dept. 246 to the 236 area where it could be sewered. The above results from 217 and 236 were confirmed by samples obtained further downstream (sewer box 3E) which consistantly analyzed below 10 ppb. IV. Future Plans -- Projects are being developed to upgrade the curbing around the incinerator area and to provide flow measurement and proportional sampling of the waste water.
