There is some slight difference in assessment of risk between the article by S R Bailey and the contribution by Lawrence Waterman on the subject of fibres other than asbestos, now being used in increasing quantities. Because your Journal is so often used by Workers, Worker Representatives and Management as guidance, we feel that we must point out that the present medical and scientific research findings are giving increasing emphasis to the fact that respiratory disease is not unique to asbestos amongst fibres, and that wherever work or work activities are likely to release respirable, durable fibres it is essential to control dust levels, maintain hygiene standards, and good working practices. We are of the view that the S S Bailey article gives recognition and therefore awareness to the new dimension, whereas the Lawrence Waterman article, perhaps unintentional, understates the potential risk.
