The primary focus of the review is the relationship between benzene exposure and leukemia mortality. As discussed over the telephone, although the primary interest is on the most recent paper by Hayes et aL in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, I feel strongly that it is necessary to review all papers generated from the Chinese benzene study (both the original "pre-Ncr cohort as well as the expanded cohort). BP-00011918 The review will include a discussion or critique of the following: nature and characteristics of the cohort, quality offollow-up data, reporting'ascertainment bias, comparison rates, concomitant exposures, exposure assessment, quality ofdiagnostic accuracy, statistical analyses, and comparison between the original "pre-NCr' cohort and the expanded cohort. I estimate that it will take approximately 80 to 100 hours of my time to complete the review. My hourly rate for this proposal is $250. Other expenses will include a few hours of a research assistant's time (hourly rate of $85), literature retrieval, copying; postage, express mail, and longdistance calls. I propose to invoice API monthly on a time-and-material basis. In terms of schedule, I estimate the project will take approximately 10 weeks. A final report summarizing the review wiJJ be submitted to API at the end of the project.
