The main span, with a length of l ,575 feet, is the longest cantilever span in the United States, and the third longest in the world. (District 7*1306) More than 57.000 tons of steel was used in construction of Chicago's Calumet Skyway Toll Bridge which has been completed at a cost of more than $100 million. The skyway extends nearly eight miles, connecting the city with the Indiana Toll Road, and will speed the flow of traffic os Chicago's badly congested Southside. Assistant lU'A COVER The soaring steel arch vpan of the Glen Canyon Bridge symbolises the projects now underway to tun a desolate ro-ner of the United States into a productive land. The 1.000-foot-long bridge rises 800 feet above the Colorado River. It is being constructed by the joint venture firm of Kiewit-Judson Pacific Murphy, at a site just downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam which it also under construc tion. Story on page 06. Assistant IH'A COVER One of the major problems in the construction of the second of two giant radio telescopes between the Sierra Nevada and the White Mountain Ranges in California was raising the 40-ton tubular steel dish to a height of 73 feet for mounting on its supporting pedestal. Two mobile 45-ton cranes were used for the job. The Amercon Corp., AGC, of Los Angeles, was in charge of the erection of the million-dollar installation and most of the base, pedestal and dish were shop fabricated by the Alli son Steel Manufacturing Co. of Phoenix.
