Quality Control considers that the absence of hard part icles in record resins is a critical requirement. As you know. Quality Control screen tests a sample from each hatch of a bulk truck for oversize prior to release. A 55 mesh screen and approximately l/2 pound of resin are used for this purpose.
Over the past three months. Quality Control has, on occasion, found oversize on Columbia 585 copolymer bulk shipments. In one case, bulk shipment 275 on 4/18/69, Quality Control rejected the shipment for ivory-type part icles and advised Production to rescreen the material. In another' case, bulk shipment 515 on 5/6/69 Quality Control held the shipment for 2-5 hours until Customer Service Laboratory was advised and the shipment released, in this case, the test showed hard oversize particles but these particles, unlike ivory, compressed under spatula pressure. This situation has repeated on 7/17/69, bulk shipment 472.
The question. Bill, appears to be one of defining what is meant by "hard". Note that the specifications read "No hard or foreign particle contamination permitted on record resins". Since this problem involves a definition of the customer needs and the requirements of our resin to meet these needs. Customer Service Laboratory is requested to re view once again, the problem of hard particle contamination and recommend to Quality Control the appropriate action to take which should include: 1. A difinition of hard particles. Various sample exhibits
would be appropriate. 2. A test method that is definitive in determining item 1. 5- The level of these particles that can be tolerated.
