CertairileedH Technical Bulletin June 25, 1980 To: ALL A/C TECHNICAL BULLETIN BINDER COPY HOLDERS Fr: J. R. ALLEY/rc Re: A/C STORM SEWER PIPE Recently, new brochures and price lists for A/C Storm Sewer Pipe were issued to all sales personnel. The purpose of Otis bulletin is to familiarize you with the product and its uses. Where Product Is Used Storm Sewer Pipe is used to transfer stormwater runoff or drainage to the nearest acceptable discharge point. This product is utilized on state highways, secondary roads, urban streets, institutional grounds, airports, parking lots and other paved areas. The state and/or the counties have standards governing the design and installation of storm sewer projects. These standards are often used as models by other design en gineers in the area so it is important to be approved at the county and state level if for no other reason than the referral. If our storm sewer pipe is not accepted in your state and county specification, we will be most happy to provide you with assistance to gain acceptance in these specifications. Product Description Storm Sewer Pipe is similar to our standard sewer pipe as it meets three edge bearing crush requirements of applicable specifications. Storm Sewer Pipe is joined with a flexible plastic ( polyethylene ) coupling and the pipe end has a longer taper than standard sewer pipe end. The plastic coupling is assembled (no lube required ) onto the pipe by sliding the coupling along the tapered end of the pipe and forced back against the machin ed shoulder. As the coupling is forced against the shoulder, it is stretched to form a tight seal preventing water from escaping and keeping out sand and silt. In almost all storm sewer pipe installations , joint tightness is not nearly as critical as it is in either water pipe or sanitary sewer pipe installations. Hence, the substitution of a plastic sleeve for rubber gaskets produces a more than adequate storm sewer joint. Crush Strength Requirements The crushing strength of storm sewer pipe is expressed as " D Load ". The crushing Bulletin # A/C 36 Date: 6/25/80 CTD000715 strength equals the D Load multiplied by the pipe diameter in feet. Storm Drain Class es are as follows: Concrete Pipe Class D Load III N. A. IV V 2000 D 2500 D 3000 D 3750 D The crushing strength for 18"/3000 D ( CL IV ) would be: Crush Load = D Load x Pipe Diameter (feet) Crush Load = 3000 x 1.5 Crush Load = 4500 Ibs/lin. ft. As you can see from the above example, the crushing strength varies with the size of pipe, whereas, our standard sewer pipe is furnished in crushing strengths of 2400, 3300. 4000 and 5000, regardless of the size of pipe. Storm sewer pipe is covered by standard specification ANSI/ASTM C 663 and other state and local highway specifications. Attached, is a copy of the latest issue of ANSI/ASTM C 663. If your local highway specifications differ from the ANSI/ASTM Specification, please forward a copy to Valley Forge for our review. For instance, the State of Calif ornia apparently requires that A/C Storm Sewer Pipe develop 1.5 times the crush strength of a comparable concrete pipe. Needless to say, we are presently addressing this problem. We hope that the information in this Technical Bulletin and the A/C Storm Sewer Pipe Brochure has made you comfortable when selling our A/C Storm Sewer Pipe. If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact us at Valley Forge. CTD000716
