SPONSORS--Mrs. William B. Franlce, wife of Secretary of the Navy, scores direct hit on bow of new carrier. 66 USS Enterprise Launched: A nuclear-powered giant, which when commissioned will be the mightiest fighting ship in the world, was christened on September 24 at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, Newport News, Va. The USS Enterprise, eighth U.S. Navy vessel to bear that famous name, was floated in the huge sub merged Shipway 11 at the James River yard and immediately claimed the title of the world's largest ship. Nor is it an idle claim. The En terprise is a ship of superlatives. She can be described only by use of adjectives such as "largest," "first," "most" and "latest." Her electrical generating potential is enough to sup ply the needs of a city of over 2 million persons. Output of all elec tronic equipment will equal that of about 300 powerful radio stations op erating simultaneously. She will be a veritable "floating city" of 4,600 offi cers and men, the largest comple ment ever assigned to a Naval vessel. Eight Nuclear Reactors The first vessel designed with more than two nuclear reactors, the 1,101-ft (335.58-m) goliath will be driven by eight pressurized-water reactors. These will be arranged in four dual systems that will turn her four 21-ft-diam (6.4m) propellers. The reactors were developed and designed by Westinghouse Electric Corporation under the direction of and in co-operation with the Naval Re actors Branch of the Atomic Energy Commission. In combination, the re actors make up the world's most powerful atomic power plant. The Enterprise incorporates the latest developments designed to ex tend air power on the seas. The carrier's nuclear propulsion plant will increase the striking capabilities of the supersonic jet aircraft she will carry. The ship's tank spaces, nor mally required for carrying fuel in oil-fired carriers, will be available for additional aviation fuels. This in ef fect will make the successor to the famed "Big E" of World War II the operating equivalent of several con ventionally powered aircraft carriers. Aluminum Used Extensively The new supercarrier, equipped with four aluminum elevators and an aluminum dome to house her elec tronic equipment, along with stand ard applications, will carry more aluminum than any other fighting ship. Each of the four giant deckedge elevators, supplied by the Westinghouse elevator division, will be able to lift a 45-ton bomber from hanger deck to flight deck in 15 sec onds. The elevator platforms, located three to starboard and one to port along the carrier's 252-ft-wide (76. 81m) flight deck, are of all-welded construction in high-strength alloy 5456, developed by Aluminum Com pany of America. Each platform is 52 ft (15.85m) wide and 85 ft Marine Engineering/Log World's Largest, Mightiest Ship e- (25.91m) long, and weighs 105 tons %>st '-a 30-ton saving over steel. he f Shipyard "Nuclear-Minded" xhe ^ The Newport News Shipyard has ill been a pace-setter for many years. of j^The Company has--with but one ex ill ception--been the leading yard in or- designing every class of aircraft car in rier built by the Navy.
