GALVESTON Generator Status DATE HLC NO December 1, 1978 I visited WCFO/GALVESTON with representatives from Virginia Tractor and Electric Machinery. We discussed generator problems with WCFO staff and we inspected and worked on the starboard generator. Summary of visit is as follows. - Checked structure of EM generator. Saw no reason to question ade quacy of EM design and directed CAT/EM to remove auxiliary supports. - Alignment checks on CAT/EM generators comparable. - Added 1.8 oz balance weight to EM generator. Vibration levels satisfactory and better than CAT generator. - Oil seal on EM unit still leaking. CAT unit oil seal apparently OK because changed last month. - Decided not to change oil seal or alignment flex plates at that time. CAT representative discovered that CAT has developed a modified oil seal for the D353 engine. Will wait to get modified seal before disassembling unit again. Major work at that time would also have interfered with ship schedule. - Left ship with EM unit operating satisfactorily. Provided ship with portable vibration instrument to monitor operation. - Mo problems reported as of 11/28 but operation of EM generator has been limited because of unrelated problems with a belt drive on engine. - Will get CAT/EM representatives back to ship to install modified oil seal/new flex plates when ship schedule permits. Expect within next four weeks. I think that will be a satisfactory and permanent repair. - No followup action with Newport News yet concerning warranty claim. - I think WCFO is satisfied with our support.
