An 8 ounce sample of VSKK suspension vinyl copolymer resin, treated with a proprietary substance to reduce vinyl chloride monomer In PVC resin. Is enclosed along with an untreated control quantity of the same resin lot. These samples are for your analysis by gas chromatography to de termine the concentration of VCM with and without treatment. The VSKK resin sample was taken at random from a car received at Ottawa during May, Blend B-716 and the specimens kept In polyethy lene bags after sampling. The treated and control have had approximately the same exposure to open air since manufacture. Please advise the VCM concentrations you find. All the above Is per request of R. N. Note On Conversation With Don F. Guyette - Ottawa. Illinois (UCC Plant) Cardinal Chemical claims that they have discovered some additive which when added with powdered vinyl resin effectiv ly r duces the vinyl chloride monomer content of the resin. (Possibly some type of catalyst?) They are seeking patent protection on their finding. Don F. Guyette of UCC Ottawa Plant will send 2 samples of VSKK, one of which Is a control, the second of which is Marked "VSKK-treated" which was "treated' by Cardinal Chemical with an undefined Material (possibly In a Henschel or in a Waring Blender) to reduce the vinyl chloride monomer content. Cardinal is working with 2 other vinyl resin producers (?) at plantconversion sites. Guyette has asked that we check to d termingVC1 monomer has been effectively reduced before suggesting any formal negotiations or arrangement between Cardinal Chemical and UCC. On arrival, samples will be forwarded to Bob Bleidt with a request for residual vinyl chloride monomer analysis. We also plan to take a light microscope picture of the samples to compare morphology.
