-A -R A _ UNITED STATES ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY WASHINGTON, D.C. 20460 U JL 2(11)2SEP-3 AMIII 26 Iff 16 2 > 22 OFFICE OF PREVENTION, PESTICIDES AND TOXIC SUBSTANCES MEMORANDUM SUBJECT: istry Meeting on PFOA FROM: Deputy Directoftbr Regulatory Management Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics TO: Administrative Record File AR-226: PFOS, PFOA, Telomers, and Related Chemicals Steve Johnson, the Assistant Administrator of the Office of Prevention, Pesticides, and Toxic Substances, met with corporate executives from seven companies involved with the Fluoropolymer Manufacturers Group (FMG) and the Telomers Research Program (TRP) on August 13, 2002 at EPA headquarters. These companies are associated with the manufacture, processing, and use of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and its derivatives. The meeting was held at the request of EPA to discuss recent submissions of toxicological study data on the ammonium salt of PFOA (APFO), and of data on PFOA blood serum levels in humans. These data submissions can be found in the Administrative Record for PFOA, AR 226. The list of meeting attendees is attached to this memorandum. Mr. Johnson explained that the toxicology studies suggest possible concerns regarding the hazards of PFOA, while the blood sample data indicate exposures to the general population that are unexplained at this time. He asked for a continued collaboration with industry to further investigate these issues. Mr. Johnson also discussed with the attendees how they intended to communicate with the public on the subject of issues associated with PFOA. Industry representatives agreed with EPA about the need for clarity in publicly available data to support communication messages about the hazards of PFOA and its derivatives, and about exposures of the general population to these chemicals and to products that are made using them. The industry offered to provide additional briefings to EPA on the current state of their knowledge about the hazards, in particular, the two generation reproduction study submitted by 3M under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) 8(e) program, and about exposures to these chemicals. The industry representatives will schedule these briefings in the near future.
